History

Bixal was officially formed on September 27, 2001 in response to the growing demand for web development and online communications services tailored for the U.S. Hispanic and Latin American markets.

Bixal’s name is inspired by Bixa Orellana L, the scientific name for Annatto or Achiote, a natural colorant used in many traditional Latin American dishes and by certain Latin American indigenous groups to paint their bodies. The plant is also referred to as the lipstick tree and its seeds are used as a natural red dye in many industries. The rich red X in Bixal’s logo was chosen to convey two key components of our corporate identity – our deep understanding and respect for the rich diversity of the U.S. Hispanic and Latin American markets and our fundamental belief that both culturally relevant communications and technology are required to tap and engage its growing power.

Since its inception, Bixal has delivered marketing and technology solutions to private companies, nonprofits, multilateral organizations and government agencies, including the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank, the Organization of American States, Corporate Voices, and Compusearch Systems.

In 2008, Bixal began providing eGovernment services, in association with CARANA/WCC, under a collaborative project designed to help the Panamanian government improve its ability to more effectively manage their trade agreements with other countries, particularly to support the implementation of the Preferential Trade Agreement between the US and Panama. In 2009, Bixal further expanded its activities in the eGovernment realm in the Dominican Republic, working with the government to design and implement an innovative online, GIS-based system to much more effectively manage the land titling process.

Bixal’s experience working with a diverse set of organizations, from small nonprofits to large, complex government agencies, as well its deep understanding of Hispanic cultural nuances puts it in a unique position to support the U.S. Government’s efforts to better serve and engage the online U.S. Hispanic and Latin American audience.
