Data visualizations for good: Using data to defend democracy

Bixal is very excited to announce its work on The Democracy Project in partnership with Freedom House. Freedom House, a non-profit founded in 1941, is dedicated to the expansion of freedom and democracy globally. After nearly 80 years of work, Freedom House is seen as a leading bi-partisan advocate on policies for the advancement of democracy. Through their analysis, advocacy, and action Freedom House continually frames the national and global debate on the progress and decline of freedom.

This past week Freedom House debuted its new research, The Democracy Project, as a new microsite. Aimed at providing a non-partisan perspective on the current state of American democracy, The Democracy Project is a joint initiative between The George W. Bush Presidential Center, Freedom House and the Penn-Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement.  The research, conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research and North Star Opinion Research, began with focus groups conducted in 10 cities across the United States. The insight gained from these focus groups was used to inform a telephone survey which had 1,700 adult participants.

Bixal worked closely with Freedom House to design and build the microsite for the project, focusing on developing intuitive and informative data visualizations to highlight key findings of the research. The Bixal team started with a design and UX workshop with the Freedom House team to gain an understanding of their mission, culture, audiences, and vision for the future of the project. We developed proto-personas to ensure a solid understanding of key audiences for the research and then quickly began a process of rapid prototyping, an iterative process that allows for continuous client feedback, given the short project timeline. In consultation with Freedom House, Bixal developed a design that was both scholarly and clean to convey the bipartisan nature of the research and used the Drupal HighCharts module to create engaging and interactive data visualizations.

Bixal is proud to contribute to the important work done by Freedom House. If you would like to learn more about The Democracy Project, visit their website:
